The Blue Eye

Overview

Want to see a natural phenomenon you won’t find anywhere else in Albania?

The Blue Eye is a beautiful natural phenomenon which is about 50 minutes drive from Ksamil. The Blue Eye, with its crystal clear water, is also known as the blue eye. This is because of a part of the lake where bubbles rise from an underwater spring, creating a dark blue color. This contrast makes it look like an eye, and hence the name “the blue eye.” The easiest way to get here is by car, but there are also guided tours. However, by car, you can also visit other attractions in the same day such as Butrint or Gjirokaster.

Then the Blue Eye is for you, and it’s only a short day trip away (about 35 km from Ksamil). The Blue Eye is a natural spring with a deep blue color in the center that descends deep into the earth about 150 feet. The water itself is so clear you’d think you could drink it. But you’re actually not even supposed to swim in the water (although people still do). So, if you want something to do near Ksamil, definitely check out the Blue Eye.

The Blue Eye, which locals call Syri i Kalter, is an amazing spring famous for its colors and shape. This spring, located in the countryside of southwestern Albania, about 35 km north of Ksamil (GPS: 39.92002, 20.18595), is very deep and from it gushes clear and pristine water that forms a spectacular lake. The Blue Eye source is famous for its deep blue color, which gradually turns turquoise and green along the edges. It looks like the iris of an eye. It is very deep, but no one knows for sure how much. However according to the locals, it is assumed to be over 100 meters deep!
